The puppet that is our government....

So it's been a day since Canada's PM Harper announced that Canada would consider Quebec a nation within Canada.

After this surprise decision, I'm still left wondering why Harper would do such a thing? I mean Harper has opened a huge can of worms. Understandably, he was trying to undercut the Bloc who were trying to introduce a bill that would declare Quebec a sovereign nation period. Not within Canada. So I can see his justification. But really I think that he's taken them a step closer. Fine, he may have avoided the sovereignty bill by giving them nation status within Canada, but how long will it be before they come and ask for complete seperation? I mean they are going to claim that they're already a nation within Canada. I also think that to some extent, Harper's hands are tied. He's trying to maintain a fragile minority government, that in recent polls, has slipped into a tie with the Liberal party. I mean one only has to look at recent proposed tax cuts to see that he's trying to win voters.

I for one believe that we should just give Quebec soverignty. I'm tired of spending tax payer money every 10 years on a referendum. A few things though: they have to pay back their portion of the debt, they can't use our dollar, they can't use our passport and lastly they can't rely on Canada for anything. Let's see them survive on their own.

Although, to be totally honest, I think this will just lead to other provinces seperating as well. I mean Alberta is so rich in resources and money, Canada is probably dragging them down. I can see a day in the not so distant future where the country of Canada will be known as the United Soverign Nations of Canada (USNC).

I agree with you 100%.  In fact over 50% of the people in Quebec don't want to seperate.  We've been through 2 referendums already, each one being defeated.  I guess what I mean to say is that we should decide this once and for all.  Doing this every 10 years is just a waste of tax payer money.

Do you think that once they become their own country, they will hold a referendum every 10 years to join back as part of Canada again?

Hey PB...you've brought up a great discussion.  I agree with you to a certain extent, that it is becoming frustrating that we as Canadians have to live through referendums every 10 years or so.  However, to have Quebec as a sovereign nation is not a decision that is pleasing to most Quebecors.  In fact, there are many residents living in Quebec that are completely opposed to the idea of Quebec separating from the rest of Canada.  Where would this leave them?  Most of them would be left with no choice but to leave Quebec, perhaps a province they've spent their entire lives residing in.  I feel those who are pleading to have Quebec as its own nation are selfish in their approach.  I mean, we've come to a day and age where we should respect one another for who we are, and what our upbringings are.  To grant Quebec sovereignty would be taking a step backwards, no?
